Competitor information

PRAGUE ZOUK CONGRESS is a Brazilian Zouk Dance Council (“BZDC”) Registry Event. As such, points are awarded to the winners and place getters (and possibly finalists) of our Jack & Jill Competitions. The BZDC records and tracks every competitor and these points are used to identify the category a person should compete in. There must be a minimum of five couples per category for points to be recorded.

The guidelines for each category are set out on this page. If you want to enter a category for which you do not meet the entry requirements stated or want to change categories, you may submit a request by sending us an email with a brief explanation of the reason(s) for your request.

 

Jack & Jill competitions are designed to highlight skills in social Brazilian Zouk dancing and the ability to dance well with a variety of partners. Competitors enter as individuals, are randomly assigned partners and dance to music selected by K&L Dance Events. Male competitors must enter as “leaders” and female competitors must enter as “followers”.

 

 

Divisions

Novice category
A person should compete in Novice if they have never competed in Brazilian Zouk Jack & Jill competitions before or have not yet obtained BZDC Intermediate level.

 

Intermediate category
A person should request to compete in Intermediate if they have obtained BZDC Intermediate level or are invited by the event organisers due to their extensive dance experience in Brazilian Zouk.

Event entry requirements

To be part of it, you need to pay 20 Eur for your registration, we will accept only people

who already purchased a Prague Zouk Congress pass.

 

 

 

Key points to remember

  • Timing must be consistent.

  • Competitors should take care in the manner they interpret the selected song.

  • Use appropriate breaks and holds, being rhythmically in sync with the music.

  • Competitors must demonstrate basic timing for a minimum of 60% of each song. This can be reflected in foundation movements, turn patterns and others.

 

Technique

  • Brazilian Zouk motion and posture

  • Proper use of Brazilian Zouk Foundation movements

  • Correct footwork in Foundation movements and turn patterns

  • Fundamental dance technique (e.g footwork placement, frame, balance, etc)

Proper use of head movements and Cambrés

 

Difficulty

  • The complexity of the foot work

  • The complexity of overall improvisation

  • Originality of turn patterns

 

Connection & synchronicity

  • Interaction with partners (Coordination of movements between them, lead/follow relationship)

  • Focus on fluidity of the dance

 

 

Appearance

  • Wear Shoes (Dance shoes or other comfortable shoes for dancing are allowed)

  • High heels are not mandatory however judges will favourably take into account the additional complexity this introduces to the dance

Wear clothes like if you were going to a social dance party – you want to stand out to the judges
